Oman
A strong culture but the romance has gone; 4WDs now replace camels

5 - 12 January 2006

Anne & I toured Oman in a hired 4WD. Our luggage had not arrived with us so stoically we bought some clothes and headed on the road. Apart from some small sections, which are currently being worked on, all roads were immaculate. This unfortunately diminished the experience since there was no challenge to get any where. The romance of a remote oasis in the desert is destroyed when a tarmac road leads upto it. However, the people were friendly and many still wore traditional Omani dress. Our 4WD was tested to its limits in sand dune driving; it is impressive what these vehicles can do. It was good to see many camels being bred in the Wahiba sands area. The food was excellent with the local curry a wonderful mixture of Indian and Morrocan. The Omani coffee was infused with spices. On returning to Musact we were glad to see our luggage had turned up in time for us to head for the United Arab Emirates.
