South Africa
A country divided; where black & white live in different worlds

1st Visit

24 January - 2 March 2003

An old Boeing 727 transported me from Zimbabwe to Jo'berg and the next day I arrived in Cape Town; a place I long wanted to see. I travelled for a month, which included the classic Otter trail hike, then Anne joined me for 1 week as we did the Garden route.

Flight School

2 March - 12 April 2003

Anne then left to tour southern Africa and I spent 41 days at a flight school in George. I had an amazing time and was very lucky to survive a crash. Paul, an instructor and I then flew Anne to Lesotho.

2nd Visit

22 April - 2 May 2003

On leaving Lesotho we found ourselves stranded until a doctor gave us a lift; he explained the stark reality of the Free State; the majority were dying of AIDS. We hired a car and explored the Drankensburg and various battlefields. After seeing the wildlife at St. Lucia we dived at Sodwana Bay and was very disappointed; see Dive Log. From there we drove to eSwatini.

3rd Visit

11 - 15 May 2003

We needed to pop back into South Africa whilst in Mozambique to sort out my Oz visa. We explored Pretoria and visted the De Wildt Cheetah research centre.

4th Visit

2 - 11 June 2003

On returning from Mozambique we spent the final days of our Odyssey Express tour in the Drakensburg where we enjoyed trekking. We then flew to my new home Australia.
