Nigeria
The most corrupt country in the world - one survives this country

1st Visit

10 - 20 December 2000

From Benin we entered Nigeria with curiosity;how much trouble would we have? 7 check points later we left the border area; amazingly the crew had managed this without one bribe. Hung out in Abeokuta while the brave opted for a brief visit to infamous Lagos; I declined. High risk for little gain. Kanu was a fascinating experience; this northern city had very recently Sharia law imposed. The women we spoke to were scared. Being Ramadan we did suffer being woken at 4am every morning by 2 hour long cries of the muezzin. Yankari national park was a pleasant surprise; the rumours were that virtually all animals had been poached, however, we found rich wildlife. Nigeria is rich in resources but corruption has meant virtually nothing works i.e. powercuts every night. We entered Cameroon and wondered how it would compare.
