This was the toughest leg on our
Inter Rail 1981 tour. The train from
Greece was packed and, thus, Braz & I stood for 48
hours in a 1 metre square area in the train corridor. We jumped out in Belgrade
for our sanity. My first visit to a communist country and the impressions were
negative. An international incident was avoided in the station waiting room. We
were unrolling our sleeping bags ready to kip in the warm room when a local
advised us not to. Minutes later an armed female guard made an inspection and
hit a person with a truncheon because he was asleep in the chair. I think we
would have been shot. With visas in hand we headed for
Hungary.
