Central Asia Tour
This tour opened my eyes to the rich history of the Silk Road and the Russian Empire.
I joined the inaugural one-month Dragoman tour of Central Asia, well prepared by reading about the Great Game and Timur. These were young republics, only ten years separated from the USSR, and we travelled through Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Georgia — tracing old Silk Road cities and the edges of a fading Russian Empire.

Reading up on Timur and the Great Game beforehand made the Silk Road cities of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan come alive.
Ten years young
These republics had only been independent of the USSR for a decade — still finding their own identity after empire.
