1st & 2nd Visits

24 August - 3 September and 16 September 1981

The Inter Rail 1981 tour took us from Monaco to Italy. We jumped off at Pisa to climb the tower before it falls. We had a 5 minute tour of Rome! We jumped off the train in Rome, took the underground to the Colosseum, got out of the station and saw the great building opposite then returned just in time to catch our train to the south. We stopped for a rest in Sicily and for the first time experienced a different culture. This was my first 'travel' experience. We took a ferry from Brindisi to Patras, Greece. Unfortunately the ferry was refused entry to Greece so we had to return to Italy and then take the ferry back again with it's papers in order. On the homeward leg of the Inter Rail 1981 tour we crossed from Austria and managed a a day in Venice. It was beyond expectations; the light was magical. After this magic we headed north to Germany.

3rd Visit

2 - 3 September 1982

Our crazy Inter Rail 1982 tour took us from Slovenia and for a quick stop at Venice. Alas, I could not afford to treat Fiona to a gondola ride. I was mesmerized by one article in the Doge's palace; a chastity belt! Braz & I then split from Fiona & Lorraine and we headed for Germany.

4th & 5th Visits

23 - 29 August 1984 & 13 - 14 September 1984

From Paris we arrived at the enchanting city of Florence; the art works on display were magnificent. After a pause at Arrezo we visited Rome and Vatican City. From our base at Sorrento we made a visit to Pompei; a truly amazing place. Our Inter Rail 1984 tour then continued by ferry from Brindisi to Corfu. On the way home from Istanbul we made a brief stop at Venice and Verona; the city of Romeo & Juliet. Our Inter Rail 1984 tour then continued onto Munich.

6th Visit

20 May - 1 June 1989

The 8 of us flew into Milan (Malpensa) airport with cycles. A train journey to Rome, a quick visit to Vatican City, and then a hard but beautiful cycle ride through Tuscany. Our cycles took us from Rome, to the lakes at Bracciano & Capodimonte, where I celebrated my birthday, the sea at Certvetchio and to the splendid cities of Sienna & Florence. A train then took us back to Milan.

7th Visit

4 - 5 October 1996

A rare work trip abroad. I spent an enjoyable 24 hours in Milan which allowed one to have a excellent meal in the old part of the city and also to wonder around the main shopping areas.

8th Visit

30 December 1999 - 2 January 2000

Jaqueline & I stayed with Fabio & Rachel in their flat in the centre of Rome. We enjoyed the Millennium celebrations with them as well as Bob & Ruth and Simon & Stephanie. The new Millennium was seen in at the Spanish Steps and then a stroll through the old city including a photo session at the beautiful Trevi fountain. We also visited Vatican City on both days.
